Leather Working Group Scope
Formed in 2005, the Leather Working Group is a multi-stakeholder group with a main objective to promote sustainable and appropriate environmental stewardship practices within the leather industry. The group develop and uphold a protocol to accurately gauge the compliance and environmental stewardship practices of leather manufacturers and to promote sustainable and appropriate environmental business practices within the leather industry. The protocol is the product of several years of work between brands and leather makers and is updated to incorporate input from members so that the protocol covers topical issues and the general quality of the audit is improved.
The group strive to work transparently and to involve relevant supply chain representation from the tanners, to the brands and retailers with active participation from leading centres of excellence within the leather industry and the utilisation of peer reviews from NGO bodies, academic institutions and other stakeholder organisations. Currently, there are 42 LWG brands and 36 LWG suppliers, a number that continues to grow.
